Before you go to the range

Do I need a new qualification for each gun? +

LEOSA refers to the type of firearm. Most states qualify you by type (semi-automatic or revolver) rather than by individual gun. Check your state page for its rule.

Can I qualify in a state I don't live in? +

Usually, yes — LEOSA doesn't require you to qualify in your home state. Many officers qualify wherever a provider offering their state's (or their former agency's) standard is convenient. Confirm with the provider before booking.

Does LEOSA cover a long gun? +

In practice, LEOSA qualification is built around concealed carry, so providers mainly test handguns (semi-automatic or revolver). If you carry something else, check your state's standard and confirm with a provider directly.

Is the qualification card a permit? +

No. It's proof you passed your required annual firearms proficiency test — not a concealed carry permit. Carry it with your agency photo ID, as 18 U.S.C. § 926C(d) requires.
