Frequently asked questions

General questions about LEOSA and how this directory works. For state-specific qualification requirements, see your state's page.

What is LEOSA?

The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004 (LEOSA, H.R. 218, codified at 18 U.S.C. § 926C) lets qualified retired and separated law enforcement officers carry a concealed firearm nationwide. To keep that authority, an officer must be tested each year — within the most recent 12 months — to the active-duty firearms standard set by their former agency, their state, or a certified instructor, depending on what their state has established.

Is HR218.us a government website?

No. HR218.us is an independent directory. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated on behalf of any government agency.

Is anything on this site legal advice?

No. Qualification standards vary by state under 18 U.S.C. § 926C(d)(2)(B) and can change. Always verify your specific requirements directly with your state's POST commission or your former agency.

Can any range or instructor administer my annual qualification?

Not necessarily. Providers vary in which qualification types they offer (handgun, shotgun, rifle) and whether they accept out-of-state officers. Confirm directly with a listed provider before visiting.

My state isn't listed yet, or doesn't have a requirements page — why?

This directory is being built out state by state, and we only publish a state's specific requirements page once it's cleared legal review. Check back, or browse providers by state in the meantime.

I run a range, academy, agency program, or am an independent instructor — how do I get listed?

Sign up on our "List your business" page, or browse to your state and county in the directory — counties open for licensing show a claim link for your category.

Do you sell or share my personal information?

No. See our Privacy Policy for exactly what we collect and why.
