How qualification works in New Jersey
New Jersey has established its own statewide standard through its Retired Police Officer (RPO) permit law (N.J.S.A. 2C:39-6.l), administered by the Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police under New Jersey Attorney General guidelines. New Jersey's own requirement is stricter than LEOSA's federal floor: a retired officer must requalify twice per calendar year (minimum three months apart), not just once, firing the Handgun Night Qualification Course (50 rounds) with a minimum 80% passing score. Satisfying New Jersey's own RPO standard also satisfies the federal LEOSA qualification requirement.
