How qualification works in Indiana
Indiana has a statewide standard available. Under IC 35-47-15-5, a retired officer must obtain annually, for each type of firearm to be carried, evidence of meeting either their former agency's training/qualification standard for active officers or the state's own standard. The Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) administers that state-level option: a 30-round course of fire (per firearm type), plus a demonstrated working knowledge of the handgun and safe handling/reloading skills, renewed annually per the federal LEOSA statute (Public Law 108-277). The retired officer bears the cost of obtaining this evidence.
